After two semesters of common subjects, S3 introduces your first real Civil-specific papers — Mechanics of Solids (CE201), Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (CE203), Surveying and Geomatics (CE205), and Engineering Geology (CE207). These are not easy subjects — they demand numerical problem-solving, conceptual clarity, and consistent practice.

CE201 Mechanics of Solids — master SFD and BMD first. Almost every exam has at least two full questions on this topic. Work through 30-40 past numerical problems before your exam.
CE203 Fluid Mechanics — Bernoulli's equation and the continuity equation are the backbone of this subject. Understand these derivations properly, not just the formulas.
CE205 Surveying — has both theory and practical components. The practical part carries internal marks. Attend field surveying sessions regularly and maintain your field book.
CE207 Engineering Geology — this is scoring compared to the other S3 subjects. Focus on rock classification, geological structures, and groundwater. Past papers show a very predictable pattern.
MAT201 — eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and complex analysis are the key exam areas. If you're planning GATE, this subject has direct relevance to Engineering Maths.
