Introduction

KTU CS S3 — 2019 Scheme

Semester 3 is where Computer Science Engineering actually begins. After two semesters of common subjects, S3 introduces three core CS papers — Data Structures (CST201), Logic System Design (CST203), and Object-Oriented Programming Using Java (CST205) — along with Discrete Mathematical Structures (MAT203). These are not easy subjects. They require logical thinking, coding practice, and genuine conceptual understanding — not just memorisation.

The jump from S1-S2 to S3 is real for most CS students. Data Structures demands both theory and implementation. Logic System Design is abstract and requires a different kind of thinking than most students have experienced before. OOP in Java introduces programming paradigms that are foundational for the rest of the degree. Starting S3 well sets the tone for S4, S5, and beyond.

How to Prepare for KTU CS Semester 3

Data Structures, Logic System Design, and OOP in Java together are the biggest jump in the entire degree — pace your prep across theory and implementation from week one.

CST201 Data Structures — don't just study theory. Implement every data structure in C from scratch. Linked list operations, binary tree traversals, and sorting algorithms are the most exam-heavy topics.

CST203 Logic System Design — Karnaugh maps, flip flop design, and counter circuits are the backbone of exam questions. Practice simplification problems repeatedly — speed matters in the exam hall.

CST205 OOP in Java — understand the four pillars of OOP (encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction) conceptually before diving into Java syntax. The lab programs test implementation directly.

MAT203 Discrete Mathematical Structures — Logic (propositional and predicate), counting principles, and graph theory are the highest-weightage exam areas. Past papers are extremely predictable here.

CSL201 Data Structures Lab — write and run programs yourself, not just copy from sources. The lab practical exam tests implementation. Understanding what your code does is mandatory.

CSL203 OOP Lab — know all the standard Java programs (inheritance, interface, exception handling, multi-threading) well enough to write them from memory. Lab exams are often time-pressured.
