Semester 4 introduces three subjects that are absolutely central to Computer Science — Computer Organisation and Architecture (CST202), Database Management Systems (CST204), and Operating Systems (CST206). CST202 Computer Organisation — instruction set architecture, pipelining, and cache memory organisation are the most exam-heavy areas. Past KTU papers are very consistent in the question pattern here.
CST204 DBMS — SQL queries and normalisation (up to BCNF) are the two most important exam areas. Practice SQL from basic SELECT to complex JOINs and subqueries. ER-to-relational mapping is also common.
CST206 Operating Systems — process scheduling algorithms (FCFS, SJF, Round Robin, Priority), deadlock avoidance (Banker's algorithm), and page replacement algorithms (LRU, FIFO) are the numerical exam favourites.
MAT206 Graph Theory — spanning tree algorithms (Kruskal, Prim), shortest path (Dijkstra), graph colouring, and planar graph properties are the key exam areas. Very relevant to GATE CS.
CST208 Software Engineering is largely descriptive — SDLC models, UML diagrams, testing techniques, and Agile/Scrum concepts. It's scoring if you prepare the diagrams and definitions clearly.
CSL202 OS Lab — know shell scripting basics and system call concepts. The Linux command-based practicals are straightforward but require familiarity with the terminal.
