Semester 4 introduces three subjects that are absolutely central to the IT degree — Algorithm Analysis and Design (IT202), Object Oriented Techniques (IT204), and Principles of Database Design (CS208, shared with CSE). Together with Computer Organisation and Architecture (CS202, also shared with CSE), these subjects explain how software is designed, how data is managed, and how the hardware beneath it all actually works.
Probability Distributions, Transforms and Numerical Methods (MA202) rounds out the maths side of the semester. Taken together, S4 is when you start feeling like a real IT professional — the subjects have direct real-world application. IT202 Algorithm Analysis and Design — time and space complexity analysis using Big-O notation and the Master theorem are the foundation. Then work through all four paradigms: Divide and Conquer, Greedy, Dynamic Programming, and Backtracking. Past KTU papers are highly predictable here.
CS202 Computer Organisation and Architecture (shared with CSE) — instruction set architecture, pipelining stages, and cache memory organisation are the exam-heavy areas. Past KTU papers follow a very consistent question pattern.
IT204 Object Oriented Techniques — understand the four OOP principles (encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction) conceptually before Java syntax. Lab programs test implementation directly — write standard Java programs from memory.
CS208 Principles of Database Design — SQL queries (JOINs, subqueries) and normalisation (1NF through BCNF) are the two highest-weightage exam areas. Practice writing SQL from scratch, not just reading queries.
MA202 Probability and Transforms — probability distributions (normal, binomial, Poisson) and Fourier/Z Transform properties are the most exam-tested areas. Numerical methods also appear in GATE.
IT234 Algorithm Design Lab — implement sorting algorithms, graph traversals (BFS, DFS), and DP problems in Java or C. The lab practical exam tests implementation, not just theory knowledge.
