Semester 4 brings DBMS, Operating Systems, and Computer Organisation — three subjects that define what a computer science engineer actually knows about systems. DBMS (PCCST402) covers relational databases, SQL, normalisation, and transaction management. OS (PCCST403) covers process scheduling, memory management, and deadlocks. Computer Organisation and Architecture (PBCST404) is the PBL subject — covering CPU design, pipelining, and memory hierarchy with 60 CIA marks.
S4 is also when students choose their first Programme Elective (PE-1) from a rich set of options including Software Engineering, Pattern Recognition, Functional Programming, Coding Theory, Signals and Systems, Soft Computing, Computational Geometry, Cyber Ethics, and two Level-5 courses (VLSI Design and Advanced Data Structures).

Buy CourseDBMS, Operating Systems, and Computer Organisation carry the heaviest weight this semester — all three are also GATE staples.
PCCST402 DBMS — SQL queries, normalisation (especially BCNF and 3NF), and transaction management are the most exam-tested areas. Draw ER diagrams and practice converting them to relational schemas.
PCCST403 Operating Systems — CPU scheduling algorithms (FCFS, SJF, Round Robin), page replacement (FIFO, LRU, Optimal), and deadlock detection are classic KTU exam topics. Practice all scheduling numericals.
PBCST404 Computer Organisation is PBL — 60 CIA. Pipelining, hazards, cache mapping, and memory hierarchy concepts appear in both internal assessments and the ESE. Understanding the concepts visually — block diagrams — helps in exams.
Choose PE-1 carefully. Software Engineering (PECST411) is practical for placements. Cyber Ethics (PECST419) is easy and scoring. Advanced Data Structures (Level-5) is excellent for GATE and competitive coding.
OS Lab and DBMS Lab practicals — write real shell scripts and SQL queries. Lab viva tests whether you understand what you did, not just whether your output was correct.
PECST411 Software Engineering, PECST412 Pattern Recognition, PECST413 Functional Programming, PECST414 Coding Theory, PECST416 Signals and Systems, PECST417 Soft Computing, PECST418 Computational Geometry, PECST419 Cyber Ethics Privacy and Legal Issues, PECST415 VLSI Design (Level-5 — 5/3 credits), PECST495 Advanced Data Structures (Level-5 — 5/3 credits).
Level-5 courses carry 5 credits (3 regular + 2 additional), subject to eligibility conditions.

Common questions about KTU KTU CS S4 — 2024 Scheme resources and coaching.
S4 includes Mathematics-4, Database Management Systems, Operating Systems, Computer Organization and Architecture (PBL), Programme Elective-1, Economics/Ethics (G-slot), OS Lab, and DBMS Lab.
PE-1 options: Software Engineering, Pattern Recognition, Functional Programming, Coding Theory, Signals and Systems, Soft Computing, Computational Geometry, Cyber Ethics/Privacy/Legal Issues, VLSI Design (Level-5), Advanced Data Structures (Level-5).
Computer Organization and Architecture (PBCST404). It follows 60 CIA / 40 ESE marking.
Both are very high-weightage topics in GATE CS. DBMS (SQL, normalisation, transactions) and OS (scheduling, memory, deadlocks) consistently contribute significant marks to GATE CS papers.
PECST415 VLSI Design and PECST495 Advanced Data Structures are both Level-5 options in PE-1. They carry 5 credits (3+2) subject to eligibility conditions.
