Understanding the GATE IN cutoff helps you set a realistic target score before you start preparing. There are three different cutoffs that matter — the qualifying cutoff, the IIT/NIT admission cutoff, and the PSU recruitment cutoff. Each has a very different benchmark.
Qualifying is only the first step. Admission and PSU shortlisting usually require significantly higher scores than the minimum qualifying marks.

SC / ST / PwD category
17.0 marks.

The GATE IN 2025 qualifying cutoff is 25.6 marks for the General category, 23.0 for OBC-NCL/EWS, and 17.0 for SC/ST/PwD candidates. This is the minimum to receive a scorecard — higher scores are needed for IIT/NIT admission and PSU recruitment.
40 marks comfortably qualify you and may get you into some NITs depending on the specialisation. However, for top IITs or PSUs, you need 55+ marks. Target at least 50 marks to have meaningful admission options.
Key PSUs recruiting Instrumentation engineers through GATE IN include BARC, ISRO, BHEL, ONGC, IOCL, and GAIL. Each PSU has its own cutoff and recruitment process — check individual PSU notifications for exact eligibility and cutoff details.
The qualifying cutoff marks are similar across branches, but GATE IN has significantly fewer candidates, making it relatively easier to achieve a good rank with the same score. A score of 50 marks in GATE IN gives a much better rank than the same score in GATE ECE or EEE.
The qualifying cutoff dropped from 32.7 in 2024 to 25.6 in 2025 because the 2025 paper was significantly tougher. The cutoff formula adjusts automatically based on the mean and standard deviation of all candidates' scores.
GATE scores are valid for 3 years from the date of the result. During this period, you can use the score for IIT/NIT admissions and PSU applications.
